Western Siskiyou County: Gold And Dreams by gail l. fiorini-jenner and monica j. hall nestled in the mountains between the sacramento valley and the oregon border is siskiyou county, the third-largest county (in land size, 2,900 square miles) in california. so vast and diverse, the region is logically divided into two halves along the shasta river (and route 5). the western portion includes such attractions as the klamath national forest; the marble mountain wilderness-primitive area (home of over 200 glacier lakes); the trinity-salmon alps; the salmon, scott, and klamath rivers and their basins (all wild rivers). interestingly, next to the appalachian region, siskiyou county is one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world. it sites the "meeting" of several western mountain ranges and the transitional mixing of various habitat types. geographically, it has considerable vertical variance in elevation, hydrological, and soil conditions. portions of the county are heavily influenced by volcanic forces. siskiyou county also has several areas that were unaffected by ancient glacial flooding. mount shasta, the county's highest point, is 14,162 feet above sea level. the shasta and karuk tribes have inhabited the area for thousands of years, and russian fur trappers arrived in the 1830s. but it was the gold rush, which began in 1849, that put western siskiyou county on the map. the largest gold nugget (at 187 ounces) found during the gold rush was discovered in scott bar in western siskiyou county. gold, timber, ranching/farming, and recreation have supported the county's communities since 1850. the county population today is 44,301 and growing. gail fiorini-jenner is a secondary english and history teacher, as well as a freelance writer of historical fiction, non-fiction, and educational texts. she is the wife of a fourth-generation rancher/farmer and lives on her original family homestead in scott valley. she is a member of the siskiyou county historical society and many writers groups.... store.yahoo.com
